Latest Updates from Our Project:

Weekend Warriors Tame Another Challenge
over 4 years ago – Fri, Oct 18, 2019 at 07:11:14 PM

We cannot resist you, brave ones. We must update even though it is the weekend. Please, hold your fury, for yesterday, you smashed through another stretch goal!

Jeeyon Shim's island will be a reality thanks to your efforts. Normally a Kickstarter struggles through the weekends, but not under your guidance. Most impressive...

And of course that means we get to reveal another author!

James Mendez Hodes ($50,000 LOCKED) (he/him) is a writer, cultural consultant, religion scholar, classicist, and martial artist whom you might know from 7th Sea, Thousand Arrows, some essays complaining about orcs and racism, or his rap translation of Homer’s Iliad. His favorite Greek mythological figures are Atalanta and Asclepius. He lives in the greater New York metropolitan area on traditional Lenape land.

We're thrilled to have a chance to work with Mendez again and hope you'll take our journey to his destination. Thanks as always for your support! We'll see you gain at $45k. :)

The Glory Is Yours—But New Trials Await
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 06:48:06 PM

24 hours.

 225% funded.

Funding goal met.

First stretch goal met.

Few warriors can make such bold claims as these. Fewer still can live up to them.

Had you merely stopped at funding the project, your name would be sung the world over. But now you rise to live among the stars themselves. The glory is yours!

Thanks to your efforts, we reach beyond the basic form of the book, to create a truly glorious tome. You've given us the funds to produce the book we most wish to. The physical book will feature full color interior artwork, printed endpapers, spot gloss accents on the cover, and more. Further, you'll face greater adventure as we add six more islands to the book itself.

It will, indeed, be worthy, an equal to the great deeds that lay ahead for you. But what of those?

Read on.

At $25,000 and beyond, new islands await!

Truth be told... we are right in the middle of reaching out to a number of authors and inviting them to create new islands that we'll release as PDFs to you in the months following the release of Agon itself. Our efforts there got delayed as we strove to slay the Kickstarter hydra of the past couple weeks, so it's a bit of a  playing-catch-up situation for us.

Our overall plan is simple. At $25,000 and each $5,000 past that—until we run through our list of authors—we will unlock a new author and new island to give you more options for pick-up-and-play adventure.

We will update the project's Campaign Page with author names and details as we get them confirmed, and will also follow up with more information in the next update for those who'd rather not refresh and scroll to find out!

Will I be able to create islands, myself?

We've gotten this question a few places! The answer is yes: we'll be including content on how to create an island in the final version of the book. But it's also important to us that we provide a rich set of islands so a Strife Player can pick one up and play right out of the book. We'll provide support for those who want to do more of that work themselves, though!

Onward, to the Trials!

That's it for today's update! We wish you the best of luck as you sail across the seas towards victory. And of course—thank you as always for your support.

Another Island Overcome, But What Awaits On The Horizon?
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 06:47:25 PM

48 hours.

Over 1000 backers.

Second stretch goal unlocked.

Glorious!

Our second day of the campaign made strong progress thanks to you all. We've now cleared two stretch goals, crested over the thousand-backer mark, and guaranteed more content to come after the book itself. Glorious!

And yet, there's more ocean to sail before we finally reach home, with islands ahead to uncover. Let's look one more time at where we are, and where we're headed.

At $20k, you unlocked upgrades for the book itself. (Details in our prior update.)

At $25k, you unlocked the first digital island for our backers at $15 and up. At the time we wrote yesterday's update we hadn't pinned down which author would be writing this goal's island, but now we have: it's Allison Arth! Naturally we're thrilled to have Allison on board to bring her perspective to the array of islands your heroes might face. Here's her bio.

Allison Arth is a poet and game designer who studied ancient Greco-Roman literature and language and literally kept a copy of The Odyssey in her glovebox for a decade so she could always find a way home. She is the creator of Gentleman Bandit and Moonblind (forthcoming), the first two installments of the Western Cantos series of poetry RPGs, as well as Gold & Girl: The Fabulous Grandmas RPG, a heartwarming hack of John Harper’s Lasers & Feelings. She is honored to be part of the AGON team.

What of that island, though? That's a part we're still working on. With each of our stretch authors we've asked them to pitch us several island concepts, and we'll likely make our selections after the campaign is over so we can ensure the broadest spectrum of possible adventures in total, as well as zero in on which concepts inspire them and us the most. So, we will be able to share the island concepts with you in a later update, and for now we're focusing on revealing who the authors are at each step.

Speaking of which, it's time to look at the authors for the next two stretch goals: Ben Scerri at $30k, and Whitney Marie Delaglio at $35k. Let's learn more about them now!

Ben Scerri is a Maltese Australian tabletop- and video-game producer, writer, designer, and community builder, living in Melbourne, Australia. Their work focuses on themes of diaspora, disability/critical illness, self-actualisation, and found family, often through the lenses of their ethnic and queer intersections. When not writer for or about games, they're liking talking about language, cooking, baking, folklore, and fashion.

Whitney Marie Delaglio, aka @widdledragon, is a game designer, artist, and creator of the brand Little Wish Productions. Her aquatic roleplaying game, Prism ( https://www.littlewishproductions.com/games/ ), is about sensuality, relationships, and conflict resolution. As a support class in the gaming community, she is an advocator of providing a safe space for intimacy and emotional vulnerability.

So that's what we have to reveal to you today. You've already made over $1,000 progress towards Ben's island becoming a reality, but the waters ahead are dark and treacherous. Stay alert, and keep the wind in your sails!

And as always, thank you again for your support.

Though we sail upon darkened waters...
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 06:44:31 PM

... it is the light you shine that guides us on our way!

You kept us on course throughout the weekend, unlocking Ben Scerri's stretch island along the way. Truly, these are the deeds of heroes, to be writ in the stars!

But, wait, what lies ahead? We already know of Whitney's goal coming up next at $35k, but another figure waits for us on the horizon. Does she portend glory, or ruin? You must journey onwards to find out.

Jeeyon Shim ($40,000 LOCKED) (she/her) is a nonwhite, queer roleplaying game designer from both coasts of the continental United States. She’s lived in Oakland, California for about a decade and the greater Bay area for even longer, where she teaches wilderness survival skills and land connection through larping. Her work focuses on bridging the alienation modern urban people often feel from the land and their roots, examining the overlap of race dynamics in land access and larp access, and immersion in the sacred aspects of (re)connecting with the land.

We're thrilled to reveal Jeeyon Shim as our $40k stretch island author. We'll be even more thrilled when you make her possibility a reality!

Thank you for sticking with us so far, and of course, thank you as always for your support. We'll see you again at $35k!

Another island tamed, and boons from the gods granted
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 06:41:52 PM

Amazing progress through the past week thanks to your striving against the whims of fate! But we have more to share with you, brave ones.

Another Island Author Revealed

Whitney Delaglio's island has been unlocked, and we're already making big strides towards Jeeyon Shim's island at $40k. After you smash that goal — the stars smile upon this possibility! — next will be an island from Kira Magrann at $45k

Kira Magrann ($45,000 LOCKED) is a tabletop roleplaying game designer, queer nonbinary cyborg, and snake friend living in Columbus, Ohio. She is known best for her most recent games A Cozy Den (about lesbisnakes in winter time) and Something Is Wrong Here (an uncanny emotional love letter to David Lynch's work). Kira has a Patreon where she designs experimental games. She is also the creator of #Aprilttrpgmaker, and the newsletter featuring marginalized creators More Seats at the Table. Follow her current projects at @Kiranansi on twitter.

Preview PDF Updated

John just uploaded updated preview materials to the backer preview folder. Backers should head over to Update #1 to grab them!

Actual Plays Added to Campaign Page

We've added some actual play video and audio to the campaign page. There's the Actual Play video featuring the game's authors and some friends, and then there's the Crit Show's multiple podcast episodes so far. We'll add more as we become aware of them; let us know in the comments if you've spotted one we've missed!

Relatedly, Adam Koebel recently did one of his "First Look" streams for Agon. It can take a bit for those to migrate from the Twitch stream over to YouTube; when it does, you'll find it at Adam's videos page. We'll also get this onto the campaign page once we're aware of it.

And that's it for today's update. Thank you as always for your support!
